Solar in Long Island
Considering going solar on Long Island?
You've come to the right place! Sunrun is the largest home solar and battery company in America and we make going solar simple.
The state of New York faces some of the most expensive electricity prices in the nation [3]. The increasing costs of energy coupled with the difficulties of an aging grid make solar panel installation and battery storage a wise decision.
Due to New York’s renewable energy goals, it offers some of the best state incentives for going solar. With or without incentives, with the Sunrun Solar Subscription you can take control of your electric bill with a fixed, monthly payment to Sunrun for the majority of your energy needs–helping you reduce your reliance on energy from the utility.
Aside from the cost of electricity, many homeowners struggle with unreliable power. As a result of an aging grid along with the local climate and coastal nature of Long Island, you may be more susceptible to extreme weather events that lead to power outages. By adding a battery to your solar system, you're not just getting a new energy experience; you're also getting powerful protection. This means when the grid goes down, your home stays powered.
Energy independence, predictable utility rates, and peace of mind are all benefits of a solar energy system with battery backup. Reach out to Sunrun for more information on what a custom system would look like and cost for you and your home.

Do I need batteries to use solar power?
That's a great question, and the short answer is no, you don't. A solar panel system can work perfectly on its own, providing power to your home and helping you take control of your electric bills.
But here’s the bright side of adding a battery:
Power through outages: With only solar panels, your system is designed to shut down when the grid goes out to protect utility workers making repairs. This means your home loses power, even if the sun is shining. A battery, however, provides powerful outage protection. It stores the extra energy your panels generate during the day and keeps your essential lights and appliances running when the grid is down. The battery can even recharge using your solar panels if the outage lasts for days.
Use your own power, day and night: Without a battery, you can only use your solar power as it's being produced. A battery lets you store the extra power your panels generate during the day and use it whenever you want—even at night when the sun goes down. This increases your energy independence from the grid and can lead to more predictable bills.
Maximize your potential savings: In many areas, utilities charge more for electricity during "peak rate" hours. A battery allows you to use your stored solar power during these expensive times instead of drawing from the grid, which helps you maximize your potential savings.
While a battery isn’t required, it’s a smart way to get peace of mind and more control over your home's energy.

What is the process to install solar panels on my home?
Making the switch to a solar-powered home is a process, but Sunrun does all the heavy lifting for you from system design, city permitting, to solar installation. Here’s a quick look at the three steps required for solar installations:
Consultation & design: You’ll meet with a Sunrun representative to chat about your energy needs and they’ll create a custom design for your home.
Home review: A certified technician will come by and make sure your home is ready for a Sunrun system. This step may even happen during your solar consultation!
Installation: After making sure everything’s approved by your utility and city, our expert crew will install your system! Most installations take about a day to complete.
After solar panel installation Sunrun will make sure your system has city and utility inspection approval. From there we can power on your system and it will start producing energy right from the sun!
What solar incentives are available on Long Island?
For those seeking to own residential solar systems, the 30% Residential Clean Energy federal solar tax credit helps reduce the large upfront investment. This federal tax credit will no longer be available for systems installed after 2025.
While the federal tax credit is a great way to bring down the cost of solar, there are also state-wide incentive programs. The New York State Solar Energy System Equipment Credit is available to customers, whether they purchase or lease their system at their primary residence. Those eligible may claim an income tax credit equal to 25% of qualified solar energy equipment expenditures (or 25% of the total payments to be made under the lease agreement) limited to $5,000.
For customers who lease their system, the State of New York and many local taxing districts exempt lease payments from sales tax. Within the five New York City boroughs the NYC Property Tax Abatement may also be available for Sunrun customers who purchase their systems. Eligible customers may claim a property tax abatement of 5% of their solar system costs per year for four years.
Finally, the NY-Sun Rebate Program is a solar incentive that is given to the solar system installers (in this case Sunrun) which Sunrun then claims and passes along to all customers through built in pricing, regardless of the financial plan selected. Now's the time to go solar in New York!
How much does solar installation on Long Island cost?
On Long Island, the cost of solar can be as little as $0 down for qualifying homeowners. At Sunrun, we recognize that purchasing a residential solar system doesn’t align with everyone’s lifestyle and financial situations. That’s why we pioneered the Sunrun Solar Subscription, which allows solar to be installed at little to no upfront cost. Just like you don’t directly pay a utility company to install powerlines, with the Sunrun Solar Subscription you pay a lower, fixed monthly rate for the energy your solar system produces, replacing part of your utility bill for a period of 25 years.
For Long Island residents choosing to purchase a home solar system, solar costs will depend on various factors, including the number of panels being installed, what additional equipment you select–such as a backup battery, and any applicable incentives you may be eligible for and can utilize. The best way to understand how much solar installation and equipment costs is to meet with one of our local Long Island energy consultants. A Sunrun representative will then assess your home and energy usage to provide you with a customized solar quote.
