Configuring Powerwall to "Self-Powered" Mode in the Tesla app
Self-Powered is an operational mode where the battery prioritizes sending stored power to the home whenever solar generation is insufficient to meet the home's demand, or during the night when the sun isn't shining. This mode is generally the default. We especially recommend new SCE, PG&E, SDG&E, Hawaii and Illinois solar customers to choose this option and a lower backup reserve (e.g. 20%) to optimize utility bill savings.
Step 1:
From the home screen open the ‘Settings’ menu.
Step 2:
Select ‘Powerwall’ at the top of the screen.
Step 3:
You can adjust your backup reserve for outages. A higher reserve will reduce utility bill savings in areas where using stored power outside of outages is incentivized. 20% is often recommended. For Operational Mode, choose ‘Self-Powered.'
Step 4:
If you have Powerwall 3 or Powerwall+, be sure that "Permission to Export" under "Advanced Options" is set to "Yes."
